FieldSurvey is a field survey and mapping application. It is built on a privacy by design principle: the data you produce stays on your device. There is no user account, we do not build profiles, we do not sell data, and we do not show advertising.

FieldSurvey does not collect, transmit or sell personal data to third parties for commercial purposes. All data produced by using the app — GPS tracks, target points, saved sessions, photographs and exported files — is stored exclusively on the device, in the app's private storage. There is no account and no personal profile is created.
Location data (GPS) is considered personal data. For this reason we treat it carefully and give you full control, as described below.
The processing of location data is based on your consent, which you provide on first launch of the app and which you can withdraw at any time by stopping tracking, disabling the optional services in settings, or uninstalling the app.
To allow surveying with the phone in your pocket or with the screen off, the app uses a foreground service that continues to record location during an active session. Tracking stops when you stop the session. The points collected remain on the device.
The app may suggest that you adjust your phone's power-saving settings to prevent the system from interrupting the service. These settings are managed by the operating system: the app does not access them and does not collect any battery-related data.
Some features send the necessary coordinates to external servers. The accessory features can be disabled in the app settings:
The maps (OpenStreetMap for cartography and offline maps, ESRI for satellite imagery) are required for the app to function: displaying them involves sending the coordinates of the viewed area to the respective servers. Requests to the OpenStreetMap maps include an app identifier containing the contact email address, as required by their usage policy.
These services are operated by third parties with their own privacy policies. FieldSurvey does not transmit to them any user-identifying data beyond the coordinates needed for the requested function.
The app automatically detects the movement mode (walking, running, cycling, driving) based on GPS speed. This information is used only locally to display the track and is not transmitted.
When tracking starts, the app temporarily uses a relaxed accuracy threshold (up to about 40 metres) to lock onto the signal quickly. This does not involve any additional collection or transmission of data.
Photographs that you choose to attach to targets are saved in the app's private storage and are never transmitted.
During tracking, the app progressively saves the session data to a temporary file on the device, so it can be recovered in case of an unexpected shutdown. This file stays local and is managed or deleted by the app itself.
The KML and GPX files you generate contain the coordinates of the path, of the start and end points, and of the targets. They are created at your request and shared only through the apps that you choose (email, cloud, etc.). Their subsequent distribution is under your control.
Since the data resides on your device, you have direct control over it:
To exercise your rights or for any questions, you can write to support@studionicolai.eu. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority (in Italy, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali).
The app is not intended for or directed at minors and does not knowingly collect data from minors.
Any updates will be published on this page together with the relevant update date.
